"Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high" .. these two lines, ever since we read the entire poem, in class VIIIth.. are always imprinted somewhere..in the back of my mind. And today, when I suddenly came across the poem, while working for some hydrogen stuff..i was hit by a barricade of those sudden "patriotic thoughts" that come to all of us..every once a while
.Somewhere down the line, all of us seem to have become so preoccupied with our lives, our trivial and petty problems that those sacrifices, the passion and vigor of our freedom fighters seems to have become restricted to the boundries of those countless songs, essays,documentries,biogrophies...Oh ya, every once in a while..there will be a Rang De Basanti, there will be a Lage Raho, and the country will be overflowing with new found emotions of patriotism and a fervor to "do something" for the country. And then it slowly fades away....at most, someone goes ahead and creates an orkut community on RDB with impassioned introductions...those communties which (as i jst mentioned to Rahul :P ) are now filled with most interesting and socially relevant topics like "Kiss or Slap","Rate the pic of the person below u","Boys vs girls" among the other intellectually stimulating ones.Where has the sense of self, the sense of self for the country disappeared? Have we become so absorbed in our own pettiness, and so determined in our cynisism of the state of our motherland, that even the mere thought of doing something to change it invites indifference.
We keep harping on about Brain Drain, and yet..an eternal fantasy and dream come true, for every second India is settling somewhere abroad.Somewhere away from the murky, congested roads, away from the unsettling state of the job opportunities,or lack thereof, away from the tangles of corruption that reach far and wide, away from the slums..that in sharp contrast to upcoming malls and IT centres, are such an eyesore,.. away from those politicians, who are too busy counting the money in their pockets,to have eyes or ears for antyhing else...yes..we all look forward to that escape, escape from our country..that gave us so much, escape from everything we ever complained about..everything that is amiss in our motherland..escape from all the chaos and confusion..
And then we have the NRI's... I find it so strange..tht once out of the country, these people take great pride in celebrating festivals, national days.. anything really, that establishes their identity, their link with the place they want to call their "homeland"..takes them hardly two years to adopt an accent that makes them more acceptable in a foriegn place though.
Not to sound like a hypocrite, I have to admit I myself have not in the least done anything, that I can be essentially proud of.It is, like I said before, just one of those moments when you look back and just...think.
Lol.. i could go on about this, like a stark raving maniac, and not make any sense.. so I guess its better I sign off, recover some sanity and make an advent once again :D
Signing off,
A very loony nikho :D
